Filter

A semi transparent glass or plastic device placed between the lens and the subject to alter the image outside the camera and lens. Common filters are UV – that remove Ultraviolet light which can cause color changes in an image.  Polarizers that allow you to line up the rays of light reflecting off water or glass and make them transparent again. In general a filter will Change, Remove, emphasize or change the density of a portion or all of the photo.  Many things that filters used to do can now be done in post processing uses digital filters.
